The weather is changing and it can lead to a perfect excuse for staying in and snuggling on the couch instead of hitting the roads. Not a horrible idea if your priority is snuggles, not the greatest if your priority is working on building consistency, getting fitter, and training for a race.
So take this week’s blog as your opportunity to get ahead of the excuse to skip the run and get the gear you need to make sure you’re able to hold consistent not matter the weather.
I have the gear outlined by my personal preferences for a temperate range and if it’s precipitating or not. Depending on where you live and what you’re used to, you might need to jump up or down a temperature scale (where my Arizonans at who are wearing their winter coats at 50 degrees?).
Additionally, I link sample products either that I use or are like the ones I use so that you an get an idea of what to look for!
40-50 degrees (dry)
Head: Maybe a headband to keep my ears warm, might ditch it half way through my run by tucking into my sports bra or a pocket.
Upper Body: Long-sleeve tech shirt with looser sleeves (so you can roll them up if you get warm). Maybe a tech t-shirt underneath so that once I’ve warmed up I can tie the long sleeve shirt around my waste.
Lower Body: Up to you! I still run in shorts during this weather as long as the rest of my body is bundled up. You might prefer a light capri.
Hands: I’ll usually wear those cheap $3 gloves if it’s closer to 40, usually just for the warm-up miles then I’ll tuck them into the straps of my sports bra or pockets.
